Overview

William helps clients protect and secure ownership of their innovations. He practices from San Antonio as a member of our virtual office, The Link.

He advises organizations ranging from Fortune 100 manufacturers to emerging materials companies on developing and managing complex intellectual property (IP) portfolios. His practice includes preparing, prosecuting, and litigating patents and trademarks across industries such as oil and gas, medical devices, semiconductors, industrial equipment, and advanced materials. He works closely with clients to align IP strategy with business objectives and to position innovations for maximum commercial value.

William’s experience across the full patent lifecycle—from prosecution through litigation—shapes how he drafts and defends patents. He evaluates how patents will perform under scrutiny, including in enforcement actions and validity challenges. Having served as an expert witness and handled claim construction and cross-examination, he offers practical insight into how patents are tested in real-world disputes.

When drafting claims, William balances securing issuance with ensuring durability. He anticipates challenges, including previously unidentified prior art, and structures claim sets to preserve validity. This forward-looking approach is designed to create patents that withstand challenges and retain commercial value.

In addition to IP strategy, William counsels clients on mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolution, risk assessment, compliance, and licensing. Drawing on nearly 25 years in IP law, including service as a company’s chief patent counsel, he takes a client-focused advisory approach centered on clarifying risk and presenting options. This enables decision-makers to evaluate paths forward based on business objectives and risk tolerance.

With a background in biomedical and materials science, William brings a cross-disciplinary perspective to technologies that often rely on shared principles of physics, mechanics, and materials engineering. He began his career as a genetic researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center, grounding his legal practice in hands-on scientific experience.
