Louay is an intellectual property (IP) attorney who helps clients enforce their rights and defend against claims brought by others. He represents plaintiffs and defendants across a wide range of IP matters.
His practice spans clients of all sizes, from startups and small businesses to large enterprises. Louay litigates patent cases through discovery, claim construction, motion practice, and inter partes review. His work has included developing infringement and invalidity positions, analyzing prior art, reviewing source code, and deposing senior technical witnesses. He also evaluates patent portfolios for acquisition and enforcement, assessing claim strength, enforceability, and commercial value. Beyond patents, he helps clients protect their brands and creative works through trademark prosecution and enforcement of trademark and copyright rights.
His work has involved technologies such as software and network engineering, streaming media and wireless communications, medical devices and pharmaceuticals, materials science, and electrical and mechanical systems. He combines his legal background with a graduate degree in biomedical science and experience in front-end development to quickly understand new technologies and develop strategies specific to each client’s goals.
Before joining Husch Blackwell, Louay practiced IP law at firms in Chicago and Washington, DC, and served as a judicial extern to the Hon. Franklin U. Valderrama of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. During his externship, he drafted opinions addressing claim construction in patent cases. That experience provided valuable insight into how judges and their chambers approach disputes, a perspective that informs his advocacy and enables him to assess matters from the court’s point of view and move cases efficiently toward resolution.
Drawing on his diverse professional and technical background, Louay is able to effectively investigate technical issues and work with judges, technical experts, and business decision-makers, tailoring communication to each audience. Clients and colleagues value his collaborative approach, sound judgment, and ability to distill complex issues and focus on what matters most.
