Overview

For Yi, patent protection is about more than securing intellectual property. It’s about helping inventors share their innovations with the world while ensuring their contributions are clearly recognized.

A former researcher and patent holder himself, Yi prepares and prosecutes U.S. and international patent applications. He has worked across a broad range of technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, software, autonomous vehicles, computer vision, semiconductors, electronics, quantum computing, LTE/5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), AR/VR, medical devices, robotics, digital twins, 3D printing, geophysics, reservoir interpretation, and energy technologies.

He advises both major corporations and individual inventors, bringing experience across varied client needs. Yi takes a collaborative, detail-oriented approach, starting with a high-level understanding of each invention before drilling into the key technical distinctions. Clients value his clear communication and responsiveness to feedback, which helps ensure their input is accurately reflected in the final application. He focuses on translating complex ideas into well-crafted patent applications that clearly communicate the invention’s technical depth and distinguish it from prior work before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Before entering patent law, Yi worked as a data scientist, assistant chief developer, and research geophysicist for international energy companies. His work centered on developing machine learning pipelines for marine and land seismic surveys, as well as integrating data science, geophysics, and geology to improve reservoir characterization and data quality.

This foundation in physics and applied research allows Yi to quickly understand the scientific and technical context of new inventions. He enjoys working with innovators to identify what sets their work apart and to develop patent strategies that clearly capture those advances.

Yi enjoys exploring new places and diving into a good book. A fan of history and political science, he is always eager to learn about people, events, and ideas that have shaped the world. His travels have taken him across the U.S. and throughout Europe, including visits to France, United Kingdom, Spain, and Austria. Most recently, he explored the Jacob’s Well near San Marcos, Texas.
