Overview

Michelle represents education clients in complex litigation matters.

A litigator with a decade of experience, Michelle has handled a wide variety of commercial cases and appeals, including those involving complex contract disputes, enforcement of arbitration awards, and alleged appraisal rights and securities violations. She’s particularly experienced with commercial contract disputes and disputes regarding international jurisdiction.

Michelle’s current focus is the representation of colleges, universities, and other educational organizations in all stages of litigation. She handles cases involving civil rights statutes, First Amendment and other constitutional rights, Title IX, student discipline, and other education-related matters.

Michelle is delighted to work with education clients. She is deeply passionate about the educational mission. She is also married to a university educator and sees firsthand the impact colleges and universities have on students.

Michelle’s own excitement for learning and service are the foundations of her career as a litigator. She enjoys investigating and analyzing complex legal issues, while working directly with her clients to identify pragmatic solutions to their real-world legal issues.  Her practical mindset means that she provides answers in a way that’s genuinely useful for clients and colleagues, and she crafts litigation strategies that keep the organization’s overall needs front and center.

Experience
  • Represented a global pharmaceutical company in a breach of contract case in the Southern District of New York.
  • Represented a foreign client in an action to recognize and enforce an ICSID arbitral award in the District of Columbia and U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
  • Represented a commercial client in an appraisal-rights action involving issues of first impression in the Delaware Supreme Court and Court of Chancery.
  • Represented a class of prisoners alleging Constitutional violations related to solitary confinement in the Western District of Virginia.
Outside the Office

Michelle enjoys spending most of her free time with her husband, young son, and their Golden Retriever. The family recently moved to Kansas City from New York and enjoys finding new places to walk, hike, play, and eat. 

An oboist, Michelle hopes to find a local community orchestra to play in, and she and her husband are currently acquainting themselves with the local music and theatre scenes.
