Josi Wergin

Associate
Overview

Josi guides clients through healthcare regulatory and compliance matters.

Josi came to the practice of law after a 17-year career in healthcare risk management, where she examined and analyzed a broad spectrum of legal, clinical, and operational implications in healthcare topics for various risk management-focused publications. Her background equipped her with a solid understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare clients, and, intrigued by the cognitive challenge of legal questions, she enrolled in law school.

As a law student, Josi capitalized on the synergy between her work, her studies, and her leadership role at the Wisconsin Society for Healthcare Risk Management. She thrived in the intellectual challenges presented, often relating her courses to the real-life legal issues she tackled at work. As a Husch Blackwell summer associate, Josi worked on diverse healthcare regulatory challenges from corporate practice of medicine issues to HIPAA regulation questions to Anti-Kickback Statute matters.

Today, Josi helps healthcare organizations navigate intricate regulations and statutory schemes, allowing them to concentrate on their primary mission: providing care. She stands out for her holistic understanding of healthcare businesses, her ability to pinpoint potential challenges, and her clear communication. Working with Josi means having an attorney who thinks, understands, and acts, always putting the clients’ concerns front and center.

Outside the Office

Josi’s first love is music: she earned an undergraduate degree in the subject, and she continues to enjoy playing the horn as well as the guitar. She also values staying active by practicing karate with her husband—a hobby they started together during her last year of law school—and sailing small dinghies on Madison’s Lake Mendota.

Josi is especially fond of spending time with her son and daughter. She and her daughter recently began taking guitar lessons and love jamming together, and she also enjoys her son’s creativity in art, music, and computer modeling.

Community Leadership

Josi has served on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Society for Healthcare Risk Management since 2019, and she’s helped plan conferences for the organization since 2017. In her years on the board, she has served as president-elect, president, past president, and secretary pro tempore. She has also been deeply engaged in the board’s decision-making and conference planning, leading a highly successful transition to a virtual conference format during the pandemic.
