Husch Blackwell's International Trade Group Expands D.C. Practice

News Releases

Nithya Nagarajan and Stephen Brophy boost Husch Blackwell's International Trade practice group.

Husch Blackwell is pleased to announce that its International Trade practice group has added two lawyers to its Washington, D.C.-based team. Nithya Nagarajan and Stephen Brophy will join the firm’s Washington office as partner and senior counsel, respectively, in its Technology, Manufacturing & Transportation (TMT) industry group and its International Trade practice team. Brophy’s arrival is effective January 29; Nagarajan will officially join the firm February 12.

Nagarajan was formerly with the U.S. Department of Commerce, serving in the office of Chief Counsel/Import Administration, prior to launching her own law practice in 2010, through which she provided consulting and legal services to clients with administrative actions before the Department of Commerce, International Trade Commission, and the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. She also provided legal assistance and legal defense services for private companies on a case-specific basis to defend appeals before the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, NAFTA Panels, and the World Trade Organization.

Nagarajan served as a law clerk at the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York for The Honorable Evan J. Wallach from 2004 to 2006. She received a J.D., cum laude, in 2001 from The American University Washington College of Law after receiving both a M.B.A. and B.A. (Political Science & Business) from George Washington University.

Brophy has over twenty years of experience in all aspects of trade regulation with a focus on trade enforcement, including antidumping, countervailing duty and safeguard proceedings. He is also experienced with customs issues, export controls and economic sanctions, international trade agreements and preference programs and has represented clients’ interests in legislative and regulatory initiatives related to international trade regulation. Brophy obtained his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and is a Vice Chair of the International Trade Committee of the American Bar Association.

“Nithya and Steve have a terrific understanding of the entire statutory and regulatory framework of the international trade system,” said Joe Orlet, the head of Husch Blackwell’s TMT group. “That knowledge, plus their experience inside and outside of the federal government, provides our clients with an excellent resource for resolving complex trade-related issues. Their addition further strengthens the active international trade and supply chain practice of the firm.”
