What These Changes Mean for Higher Education Policy and Administration

Changes in political leadership in Washington, DC, typically result in some level of change in education policies and priorities at the Department of Education and on Capitol Hill. The change from the Obama administration to the Trump administration resulted in seismic shifts in both tone and action. Similarly, the Biden administration is expected to dramatically alter the priorities and focus of higher education policymaking. This comes on the heels of the COVID-19 epidemic, an unprecedented, disruptive event for higher education that is still being played out.

Our panel of higher education experts discuss expected changes and addressed what institutions of higher learning can do now to prepare for this sea change.

Topics  include:

  • What is the Biden administration’s expected response to the student loan crisis and ever-increasing cost of a college degree?
  • How could immigration policies change? How could international students be affected?
  • How could Title IX policy change? What steps should universities take to prepare?
  • Can colleges and universities expect guidance or assistance in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic? What new challenges could 2021 bring to pandemic response?

Speakers:

  • Peggy Daley, BRG
  • Lisa J. Parker, Husch Blackwell
  • Peter Land, Husch Blackwell
  • Scott Rice, University of Illinois
