Karen Luong will present, "Emerging Medicines in Healthcare - Providers Managing Alternative Substances," at the 2025 NAPABA Convention on Friday, November 7, 2025.

This presentation will focus on the incorporation of alternative substances - cannabis, ketamine, kratom and psychedelics - in healthcare. Discussions will center around legal concerns for healthcare providers involving licensing, payors and DEA registrations. The presentation will also provide an overview of federal and state controlled substance prescribing concerns and restrictions. Other topics include CPOM issues, fraud (kickbacks & physician self-referrals), off-label uses, right to try laws, FDA approvals, incorporating APRNs, involvement of private equity and various delivery models.

In addition, this program will discuss use of alternative substances in the AAPI communities, and how AAPI communities will be impacted by changes in how alternative substances are implemented into healthcare delivery.
