During the last several years, more than 20 states have enacted “Parking Lot” or “Guns in Trunks” laws that allow employees to leave handguns in their cars while parked on employer property.
Since federal law generally does not regulate firearms in the workplace, employers must familiarize themselves with their state’s specific laws. In a recent issue of Labor Relations Law Insider, Husch Blackwell’s Terry Potter, partner in the firm’s Technology, Manufacturing and Transportation group, and associate Robert Rojas shared their 50 State Survey of Workplace Firearms Laws report that addresses individual state laws regarding firearms in employee parking lots and posting requirements for the prohibition of firearms within an employer’s property.
The document was one feature of a recent webinar on the topic that provided an overview of workplace gun legislation and drew nearly 650 attendees from across the country. Potter also discussed how to minimize associated risks in this podcast.
“You have to look at each state to determine what your rights and responsibilities as an employer are,” Potter said. “Employers should become familiar with the laws in their state and consider putting a workplace violence policy in place.”
