Overview

A registered patent attorney, Scott is an inventor’s and patent examiner’s greatest ally. His carefully crafted patent applications, which contain digestible language describing complex technical concepts, help to expedite patent prosecution.

Scott strategizes with clients to protect their chemical, life science, medical device and other technological ideas and inventions. Depending on the business’s specific goals, these strategies range from conducting patentability searches to filing patent applications in the United States and throughout the world.

Scott’s science background and industry experience taught him to think like an engineer and influenced his adaptability to a range of technical disciplines including software applications and mechanical matters. After earning an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, he assisted in the development of filtration systems and industry cooling tower applications at 3M Company. During this formative time, he learned of the value of intellectual property and how patents safeguard the development and commercialization of innovative products—all of which inspired him to start his career as a registered patent agent. For nearly three years he handled prosecution matters ranging from application and appeal brief drafting to domestic and foreign office action responses at a law firm boutique. To serve clients more completely, he pursued a law degree and worked as a patent agent/law clerk as a member of 3M’s HealthCare Business Group. After graduation, he returned to a law firm setting and prosecuted patent applications for small and large companies alike.

Scott joined Husch Blackwell in 2024 and provides comprehensive advice across myriad patent-related issues.

Outside the Office

Scott is a fan of all Minnesota sports teams. His great-grandfather played for the Chicago White Sox and he comes from a family that follows the Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves, and Golden Gophers.

Scott resides in downtown Minneapolis where new restaurants are always opening their doors. Two of his favorites are Sanjusan (Japanese-Italian cuisine) and Butcher and the Boar (American cuisine). When not in the office, he is often traveling to northern Minnesota or across the United States. Some of his favorite destinations include San Diego, Montana, and New York. Growing up, he fondly recalls backpacking to the border of Montana and Canada with relatives, a two-week adventure during which he climbed mountains and slept outdoors.

Scott enjoys the concert scene and all types of music. During the 1990s, when his family lived in Kansas City, his mother worked at a local radio station and would often allow him to announce the next artist and song played on the airwaves.
