Before law school, Matthew served in the United States Coast Guard, where he developed a keen interest in working as a member of a team to protect the natural environment. That opportunity, paired with an undergraduate background in political science and business administration, led him toward collaborative approaches to a cleaner energy future.
During law school at the University of Michigan, Matthew became involved with the Environmental Law Society, the Michigan Journal of Environmental and Administrative Law, and gravitated toward coursework in the school’s Environmental and Energy Law Program. Courses in energy law, his experiences as a summer associate at Husch Blackwell, and an externship at the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Environmental Protection Unit shaped his view of what is possible in a shifting regulatory landscape. That mix of public and private sector experience drew him to energy real estate, where he sees a chance to help build tangible, positive change through renewable energy development.
More than any other experience in law school, Matthew credits his time as a summer associate at Husch Blackwell reviewing, drafting, and finalizing transactional agreements in support of energy real estate clients as confirming that the firm was where he wanted to build his career, valuing colleagues who pushed and supported him both personally and professionally.
