With a Ph.D. and clinical experience, Jonathon applies his bench-to-bedside mindset to intellectual property (IP) law, translating scientific insight into thoughtful client care.
Jonathon works with research universities and pharmaceutical companies, focusing his practice on IP licensing, patent prosecution, and due diligence. He is also equipped to assist clients with clinical trial agreements.
Jonathon’s doctoral research examined improving treatment outcomes for children with infantile cataracts—from determining the inherent characteristics of the pediatric eye causing postoperative scarring to evaluating how early pharmaceutical interventions could prevent scars from ever forming. His scientific training, gleaned from nearly a decade in the lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), taught him to see both the molecular details and the broader picture of how treatments can improve health. He brings that same perspective to his legal practice, starting with the client’s goals, then refining every licensing agreement and patent argument to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Prior to joining Husch Blackwell in 2025, Jonathon worked at an Am Law 200 firm, where he assessed patent portfolios and prosecuted national and international patent applications for life sciences and software technologies. He also drafted licensing and collaboration agreements across a range of IP rights; performed due diligence assessments of patent portfolios for mergers and acquisitions; and provided cross-functional litigation support.
While Jonathon initially planned to attend medical school, his path shifted after enjoying his research experiences during his undergraduate studies. Upon pursuing a Ph.D., he kept an open mind to law school following multiple discussions with attorneys—ranging from family friends to encounters with attorneys while serving on MCW’s Institutional Review Board. Aligning with his passion for scientific research, he began to envision a career that could combine his curiosity about disease with problem solving in a legal context—and allow him to engage with clients while applying the analytical thinking skills developed during his Ph.D. In addition to his multifaceted educational background and clinical approach, clients value Jonathon’s responsiveness, thoroughness, and talent for translating complex ideas into digestible language.
