Unmanned Aircraft Systems: What Colleges and Universities Need to Know About This Emerging Technology

November 5, 2015 - January 1, 1900

Webinar

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), otherwise known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones, are proliferating on college and university campuses. Operators range from students and clubs that fly UAS for recreation, to faculty who use UAS for research, to athletic departments that use UAS to record sporting events. Because UAS are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and present unique privacy and liability concerns, institutional leaders should be aware of key legal requirements and limitations on their use. They also must be purposeful about developing policies and practices governing the use of UAS on campus and by members of the institutional community.

Join Husch Blackwell attorneys as we discuss important points college and university officials need to know about this emerging technology.

Topics

  • The current status of FAA regulation of UAS, anticipated changes in regulation, and the important regulatory distinctions between commercial, research and recreational use
  • The privacy implications of UAS on campus and the growing trend of municipal and state regulation to address privacy concerns
  • Unique liability risks created by UAS and best practices to minimize such risk
