Hospice and home health providers face challenges unlike at any time in the past. CMS’s enhanced enforcement efforts, including new tools such as the Provisional Period of Enhanced Oversight and Expanded Prepayment Review, target fraudulent actors, but reputable and quality hospices invariably get caught in the government’s wide net. CMS also has deployed nationwide moratoria and intends to deploy a service and spending variation index (SSVI) to detect potential compliance issues. In this presentation, Husch Blackwell’s Hospice, Home Health, and Palliative Care Team provides the latest information on CMS’s efforts, including the processes employed by CMS and its contractors, the areas that are targeted, and how providers can prepare for and respond to those efforts.
