Husch Blackwell’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems group is soliciting input from its clients and other interested persons in order to respond to the FAA’s request for comment to Astraeus Aerial’s petition for exemption from certain Federal Aviation Regulations. If the petition is granted it will allow Astraeus to operate unmanned aircraft systems with FAA approval for commercial purposes in the film and television industry. A copy of the petition can be found online. The period for comment is open through July 16, 2014.

Astraeus’s petition is one of seven substantially identical petitions seeking the same exemptions. The FAA has stated that it will consider comments when it drafts its final decision as to all seven exemptions. The FAA is interested in public opinion regarding whether such exemptions should be granted since the FAA’s decisions may set a precedent for future exemptions for commercial unmanned aircraft systems.
