DE&I Speaker Series | Miracle of Innocence: A Presentation by Co-Founder Darryl Burton

January 28, 2021
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. CT

Webinar

We are hosting a presentation with Darryl Burton, Co-Founder of Miracle of Innocence, an Overland Park, Kansas-based organization devoted to helping exonerate those who are wrongly convicted. The organization provides referral services for the wrongly convicted from retrial through exoneration, and then re-entry back into society as a productive, connected member of the community.

Mr. Burton was wrongly convicted of a St. Louis, Missouri murder in 1984 and served 24 years in prison before being exonerated and proven innocent in 2008. He formed the organization along with LaMonte McIntyre, who served 23 years in Kansas for a murder he did not commit. Since his exoneration, Mr. Burton has spoken with hundreds of groups nationally and internationally and currently serves as a Pastor Associate at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas.

Mr. Burton's message concerns the implicit bias that is involved in the criminal justice system’s rush to judgment, as well as the need for all people and all races to be involved with change. “Throughout history, it is documented that slavery, Jim Crow, voting rights and other equal rights abuses didn't change until our white brothers and sisters decided enough is enough,” Mr. Burton said. “We need your voices, minds, bodies and leadership out front as a spokesperson about the injustices we see right before our eyes. Everyone should be involved in making things better for us all.”

Moderating the program will be Nacente Seabury, a Senior Associate in our Kansas City office, representing firm clients in toxic tort, mass tort and product liability matters throughout the nation.
