Husch Blackwell Sanders is pleased to announce the addition of two Partners to the Chicago office: Edward D. Manzo and Mark J. Murphy. Manzo will concentrate in intellectual property litigation and Murphy will concentrate in patent prosecution.

Manzo is active in the legal community in Chicago. He worked on the court committees that drafted the local patent rules for the Northern District of Illinois (effective Oct. 1, 2009) and the Seventh Circuit pattern jury instructions for patent cases (adopted in 2008). He will become President of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) in May 2010 and has held various leadership positions within the Association for the past nine years. He joined Husch Blackwell Sanders after 11 years with Cook Alex Ltd., where he was a Co-Founder, Shareholder, and Executive Vice President. Specializing in IP law since 1975, Manzo has represented a wide range of clientele at trial and appellate courts. He has litigated utility and design patents, trade dress, trademarks, and trade secrets. His experience also includes intellectual property counseling, opinions, and negotiating patent licenses.

Recently recognized as a Top 100 Illinois Super Lawyerfor  2010, Manzo is also recognized in Best Lawyers in America (2010), Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, and Illinois Super Lawyers (2005 et seq.) In addition, Manzo is an accomplished writer and frequent speaker on intellectual property law, serving as an Adjunct Professor of Law for DePaul University College of Law and lecturing at John Marshall Law School and multiple legal organizations. He is editor-in-chief of Patent Claim Construction in the Federal Circuit and Patent Claim Interpretation - Global Edition, both published annually by West. He also is a columnist for IP Litigator magazine. Manzo earned his J.D., cum laude, from State University of New York (1975). He earned his B.S. in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (1972) (Unified Honors Program). He is a member of the bars of Illinois and New York.

Murphy was also a Shareholder with Cook Alex Ltd. prior to joining the firm. Throughout his career, he has dealt with diverse intellectual property legal matters. Murphy's practice has concentrated mostly in patent litigation and all phases of patent prosecution matters globally, including extensive experience before the U.S. Patent Office, and also includes work regarding patent validity and infringement opinions, trademark registration and intellectual property client counseling. His clientele includes businesses both domestic and international seeking to protect semiconductor processing methods, LCD and electroluminescent display technology, cancer treatment and medicaments, magnetic recording mediums, medical devices and beverage-ware technologies. Murphy earned his J.D. from Marquette University (1989). He earned his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame (1986).
