“I have often said that if I were able to draft a construction professional for my ‘Fantasy Football’ construction team, my former co-worker and current client Denita Schreier would be the easy first pick. My colleague Mary Parmeter works with Denita to support her development projects. Mary sat for an engaging interview with Denita to learn more about her experiences at WDS Construction and in the industry.” —Josh Levy

How did you become involved in the construction and design industry?

My path into construction wasn’t a straight line, but once I found it, I knew it was where I belonged. My first job out of college was in the horse racing industry, and legislation had just passed allowing them to build off-track wagering facilities. I was fascinated by the design and construction process—watching a business quite literally rise from the ground up. I was hooked.

In many ways, construction was already part of my story. My dad worked as a carpenter for the Hershey Chocolate factory and built houses on the side. After proposing to my mom, he remodeled a farmhouse on seven acres in Hershey and built her a horse barn. It became a childhood dream property and sparked my lifelong love of horses—and, ultimately, my appreciation for how the built environment shapes our lives.

What’s always drawn me to this industry is that it’s about more than just creating buildings—it’s about creating opportunities, connections, and communities. That sense of purpose and collaboration is what continues to inspire me every day.

What is something that your company is doing that you consider innovative?

At WDS, we’re continuously pushing growth—both in terms of the technology we use and the people on our team. One of the ways we’ve done that recently is by adding a preconstruction department, which gives us more focus and attention on projects before we even break ground.

What really sets us apart, though, is how client-focused we are. We don’t just position ourselves to meet expectations—we want to over-deliver, and our clients notice that. From the very start of a project through closeout, we take a global approach, looking at the big picture and refining processes along the way to make everything run more smoothly. We aim to deliver more than just buildings—we deliver a different client experience, which is at the heart of our mantra: we’re built to build better.

What poses a challenge, risk, or opportunity for your clients, and what is your company doing to address it?

Our clients face a range of challenges—from deciding when to move forward on a project to managing capital, costs, and timelines, all while balancing speed to market with budget certainty. On top of that, fluctuating material prices, labor availability, and shifting project priorities can make even well-planned projects feel complex and unpredictable.

At WDS, we address these challenges through early collaboration and open communication. We bring our construction and design partners to the table as early as possible so potential risks and cost drivers are identified before they can become a problem. By understanding each client’s priorities and needs—whether it’s schedule, budget, or sourcing capital—we help them make informed decisions with real-time information.

We also see opportunity in these challenges. By being proactive, flexible, and transparent, we’re not just building projects—we’re building long-term relationships based on trust. Our handpicked teams play a critical role, ensuring each client experiences smooth project delivery and exceptional quality.

What is something you view as an emerging trend in the industry, and what are your perspectives on it?

AI is all the rage in our industry right now—and for good reason. Tools like AI-assisted planning and digital project management are integrated into our everyday workflows, transforming how we design, plan, and execute projects while improving efficiency and decision-making. At WDS, we embrace this technology because it helps us deliver projects smarter and faster.

That said, technology can never fully replace the people element of construction. The experience, judgment, and expertise of our teams are what truly make a project successful. One of the most critical trends we’re seeing is a shift toward people-centered construction—recognizing that success isn’t just about what we build, but how we build it and who we build it with. I recently walked a jobsite that was near completion with a project manager and was amazed at how he fielded questions from subcontractors and owners—with incredible speed and expertise. That level of real-world knowledge can’t be replicated by AI.

We as an industry need to continue to actively invest in young talent. At WDS, we do just that and mentor the next generation, giving them a chance to explore different roles while passing along the experience and judgment that only years in construction can provide.

At its core, this trend reminds us that people remain the heart of the industry. Combining cutting-edge technology with skilled, engaged teams allows us to deliver projects efficiently while maintaining the quality, safety, and innovation that our clients expect.

Any final thoughts on what to keep an eye on in the near future in the Construction & Design industry?

I believe the next few years in construction will be defined by collaboration, adaptability, and purpose. Clients are seeking partners who can think beyond the immediate project scope—partners who understand their business goals and the impact their projects have on the community.

At the same time, attracting and retaining talent will remain a top priority. The companies that succeed will be those that invest in their people and share knowledge.

At WDS, that’s exactly our focus: continuing to build people, build communities, and share our passion for construction in meaningful and lasting ways.

Are there any upcoming events or opportunities for people to learn more about your company?

In 2026, we’re focused on sharing the expertise and passion that live within WDS Construction. Through articles, podcasts, and other content, we’ll offer a closer look at the people and knowledge that drive our projects.

We’re also highlighting our team members and departments—showcasing their experiences, insights, and what they value about building both careers and communities through construction. This supports our commitment to educating the next generation and demonstrating the rewarding, dynamic nature of the industry.

You can also find us at career fairs, on industry association boards, and at trade events throughout the year. Follow us on LinkedIn and visit wdsconstruction.net for updates as these initiatives roll out and to see where we’ll be next.
