Curt leads the firm's Healthcare, Life Sciences & Education industry team. 

He has developed a national healthcare practice providing transactional, regulatory and compliance guidance for academic medical centers, hospitals, physicians, and other types of healthcare providers.

Curt routinely serves as outside counsel to academic medical centers, hospitals, and health systems regarding complex hospital/physician integration arrangements. He also is experienced in handling compliance and reimbursement matters, including government investigations and internal compliance reviews.

Known for delivering optimal legal strategy to sophisticated restructuring, affiliations, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures, Curt is also a frequent speaker on healthcare matters before various organizations. In addition, his deep knowledge has been recognized by his peers. Among many other honors, Curt is recognized by The Best Lawyers in America many years running.

Experience
  • Represented large hospital system in closing a $275 million transaction that gave client full governance and operational control of a three-hospital Denver-based health system.
  • Settled a Stark Law violation with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of Health and Human Services after a four-year internal investigation, self-disclosure and extensive negotiations. The matter was resolved with no criminal charges, no admissions of False Claims Act violations, and no imposition of a corporate integrity agreement or government oversight.
  • Assisted several hospitals and physician groups in developing clinical integration models and to better prepare for healthcare reform.
  • Assisted hospitals and physicians in structuring and developing joint ventures (cardiac catheterization laboratories, diagnostic imaging centers and ambulatory surgery centers).
  • Represented healthcare providers in civil and criminal fraud and abuse investigations.
  • Advised providers on Medicare, Medicaid, Stark, and other regulatory, compliance and reimbursement issues.
  • Assisted a physician practice management company in structuring a national network of clinics.
  • Developed a unique model to affiliate a small county hospital with a larger health system without an actual "sale" of the hospital, in a first-of-its-kind hospital lease arrangement in Iowa. Navigated a public election, attorney general approval and the Iowa pension program approvals to complete the affiliation.
  • Successfully negotiated major updates to joint venture arrangement between a neuro service provider and a large health system in Arizona which led to the provider working with the hospital to build and develop a new offering, a neuro services tower.
  • Assisted hospital in preserving relationships with departing cardiologists who were forming an independent group. Created complex, comprehensive set of arrangements with cardiologists and outside management company to preserve services to hospital patients.
  • Merged three orthopedic practices with very different compensation structures, varied affiliations and different management approaches into one single large orthopedic practice, the largest in western Missouri and eastern Kansas.
