Overview

Tom counsels a range of clients on the strategic protection, licensing and enforcement of intellectual property rights.

He has prepared and prosecuted many U.S. and international patent applications and secured patent rights for clients in construction, printing, manufacturing and computer-related technologies.

Tom has supervised and conducted intellectual property due diligence investigations for corporate mergers, acquisitions and refinancing, and has drafted and negotiated patent license, nondisclosure and joint development agreements.

Tom’s notable experience includes:

  • Representing a Fortune 500 automotive parts manufacturer in patent counseling and litigation.
  • Managing the intellectual property portfolio for a manufacturer of commercial washroom hardware and sanitary technologies. 

Before attending law school, Tom received a bachelor’s of science, cum laude, in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Tom also spent time as a research assistant at Cornell University.

Experience
  • Manages the domestic and international patent portfolio of a national scaffolding manufacturer.
  • Represents several clients in the industrial manufacturing industry, developing and participating in patent review committees charged with strategically evaluating inventions for possible patent prosecution.
  • Prepares and prosecutes patent applications relating to construction, electronic commerce and the Internet, business methods, packaging, software, food industry machinery, bathroom hardware, and other mechanical apparatuses and systems, including design and utility cases.
  • Represents a Fortune 500 automotive parts manufacturer in patent counseling and litigation.
  • Develops and negotiates licensing, cooperation and joint development agreements relating to a variety of technologies.
  • Strategically assesses, prioritizes and works to remediate the most significant legal compliance risks, particularly IP-related risks, arising from clients’ IT operations.
  • Advises manufacturing clients on policing and protecting copyright, trade dress, trade secret and trademark rights.
