Overview

John brings an impressive international portfolio to the table when advising traditional and renewable energy companies seeking to acquire, develop, construct or finance projects and assets.

Over 15 years, John’s work on billions of dollars of projects now producing tens of gigawatts of power has given him a deep understanding of issues that are important to energy clients. He knows how massive an undertaking a new energy project can be, from site acquisition, local government interaction and permitting, to equipment procurement and construction. John also leads teams of talented, experienced attorneys to prepare projects for disposition and acquire developed or operating projects.

As margins for projects of all types continue to narrow, John appreciates that companies need savvy, common-sense strategies to maximize the bottom line and partners with clients every step of the way. Knowing he supports projects that will provide lasting impacts for the world and his children makes the work that much more rewarding to him.

Algonquin Expands Globally With Joint Venture

Canada-based Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. sought to form a joint venture with Spanish renewable energy developer Abengoa, S.A., for the development and construction of clean energy and water infrastructure assets outside of North America. John’s team advised Algonquin on acquiring a $608 million, 25 percent equity interest in an English company, Atlantica Yield plc, and formed a joint venture with Abengoa.

Outside the Office

John coaches his son’s and daughter’s ice hockey teams.

This requires a lot of shuttling to and from the ice, dragging around equipment, lacing skates and airing out the car after practices.

In Kansas City, hockey is a male-dominated sport; there are barely enough interested girls to compose one team. As head coach, John had to think outside the box to find competition for his daughter’s team. He organized a trip to a 90-team, all-girls tournament in St. Catharines, Ontario, giving 10 hockey players from Kansas City a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
