Labor & Employment

  • Navigated global organizational employment matters including hiring, performance management, termination, reductions in force, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), affirmative action plans, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)/Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations, noncompetes and employee benefits.
  • Independently arbitrated and mediated labor disputes.
  • Acted as university's lead negotiator on collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with unions.
  • Defended institutions against charges of discrimination before Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR).
  • Defended university against charge of Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) before labor relations board.

General Counsel & Governance

  • Guided C-level executive team through wide variety of risk management, ethics, daily operations and crisis management.
  • Counseled administrators, trustees and senior leadership of healthcare, technology and professional education institution on broad array of risk management, daily operations, ethics and crisis management, including divestiture.
  • As associate general counsel for university, directed all legal matters, including student affairs, contract drafting and negotiation, regulatory compliance, litigation, policy development, governance, training and risk management.
  • As associate general counsel for global healthcare, technology and professional educator, navigated high-stakes bet-the-company, class and individual actions and regulatory inquiries brought by Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Department of Education.
  • Served as secretary of governing boards of two healthcare education institutions. Drafted board governing documents and facilitated onboarding of new trustees.

Compliance

  • Spearheaded and implemented university Title IX compliance program and served as inceptive coordinator: drafted policies, trained staff and students, and handled investigations.
  • Led internal investigations in response to campus claims.
  • Developed and maintained policies, procedures and training regarding compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and other state and federal regulations.

Janelle and her husband are foodies who enjoy Chicago’s bustling restaurant and wine scene. With two very small children at home, Janelle’s weekends are busy with play dates, kid’s activities and plenty of time at pools and parks.
