Why have you chosen to make your career at Husch Blackwell?
I attended several law student networking events during my 1L year. The one hosted by Husch Blackwell stood out because the firm’s representatives made me feel extremely comfortable – so much so that I became a summer associate at Husch Blackwell the following year. During my summer at the firm, the attorneys I worked with took time to explain the context of the deals or litigation matters I was working on and answer my questions, which made it easier for me to stay involved in any particular matter throughout the summer. I wanted to work at a firm where I could get plugged in quickly and where I could feel comfortable asking questions because more senior attorneys were willing to teach me. I found that at Husch Blackwell – and that is what ultimately drew me back to the firm full time.
What is one thing that makes Husch Blackwell special?
The firm’s commitment to mentoring. I was assigned a mentor when I started, but in the Dallas office, where I work, I can get answers to any questions, whether they be about substantive or personal issues, from just about anyone. Someone is always available and willing to talk through a problem or answer my questions. The Dallas office is really interested in helping me develop in my career, which is just awesome.
Is there a recent achievement you found particularly rewarding?
Recently I started taking on more responsibility and worked on a purchase of a project here in Dallas, which involved a loan transaction as well. I helped draft and negotiate the purchase agreement, guide the client through the diligence process, and ultimately close the real estate purchase and the loan. It was great to get to work with the client so closely from start to finish on this transaction, and to be able to see the project in town.
Describe the mentoring and coaching support you have received at Husch Blackwell.
Beyond what I’ve already shared, I have a partner mentor who prioritizes coming to my annual reviews with me. This is not required, but she always attends and calls me afterward to debrief and provide guidance. She is always open with me when I ask for help.
How has Husch Blackwell supported you in achieving work/life balance?
Our partners in Dallas are really committed to working with us on scheduling and to making hiring decisions that keep our group well-staffed so that we are not too over-extended to achieve work/life balance. Our managing director of the Real Estate, Development & Construction (RDC) group, of which I’m a part, helps partners find associates with capacity to provide assistance on projects, which is a huge support to the associates in the RDC group and keeps workflow to various associates relatively balanced.
What opportunities have you had to become involved in firm leadership?
In Dallas, I help conduct on-campus interviews and make hiring decisions for summer associates, then offer recommendations for permanent hires from that program. I also am involved in RDC’s Catalyst Committee, which focuses on internal process improvement within the group.
What is your advice for a new hire?
Enthusiasm for learning can go a long way here! It’s obvious to partners and senior associates who are assigning work. Even if you get things wrong or don’t fully understand, they are happy to teach you if you are excited to learn.
