A conversation with Emily Constantine.

Why did you leave Husch Blackwell? Where did you go and what did you do?

I left Husch Blackwell in 2018 to accept a position as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. A number of attorneys I worked with at Husch Blackwell had previously served as Assistant U.S. Attorneys and always spoke highly about that experience. And, it definitely did not disappoint! I had a fantastic experience in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with wonderful colleagues, a wide variety of affirmative and defensive cases, and tremendous opportunities for training and professional growth.

What prompted your return to Husch Blackwell?

While my experience working in the U.S. Attorney’s Office was fantastic all around, I realized after nearly 3.5 years that there were aspects of private practice that I missed. In particular, I missed having a wide variety of clients (instead of a single client) and the challenges that came with ensuring that our approach to a particular case was tailored to the client’s unique preferences and concerns.

During my time in the government, I also stayed in touch with many of my colleagues from Husch Blackwell – just as I do now with my former government colleagues. Maintaining those professional relationships facilitated my return to private practice, and has also made the transition into the private sector feel seamless.

In retrospect, what is one thing you missed about Husch Blackwell?

The variety – and I mean this in all aspects of who we are and what we do. From our broad geography to the types of clients we serve, to the approaches we take to solve our clients’ challenges, to the nice mix of people we have here who have been invested in my success and who supported me during my transition back to the firm as a lateral rehire… It all has helped me to grow as a lawyer. This is my professional home.

What was the best change that happened at Husch Blackwell during your time away?

When I left Husch Blackwell, it had only recently combined with the midsize firm where I had started my career. Now, after complete integration of the firms, I’m able to tap vast resources across our footprint as I pursue my clients’ interests.

In Milwaukee specifically, I enjoy our new offices in the Huron Building (and new coffee machine and other amenities!) and am excited by the many new faces (to me) who work here. The firm has put a lot of effort into making our offices energizing, comfortable places to work, and I look forward to coming to the office.

What is one thing that stands out from the Husch Blackwell employee experience?

Keep the light on for alumni. When I left to pursue an opportunity elsewhere, the firm didn’t write me off. Instead, it gave me space to develop professionally then welcomed me back when the time was mutually right. Our leadership understood how my experience away from Husch Blackwell benefited the firm, our clients and my practice.
