Career Journey

A conversation with Derek Taylor.

Why have you chosen to make your career at Husch Blackwell?

What appealed to me most was the national geography and reach. I am from Texas and practiced there prior to moving to Milwaukee. With Husch Blackwell having a robust presence in Dallas, Austin and Houston, I thought it might be an opportunity to expand relationships with some of my former contacts and clients that I had there, and it has been. Also, we have a deep, experienced team here, especially in my areas of finance, real estate, and other transactional work, which opens more doors.

What is one thing that makes Husch Blackwell special?

Two things come to mind. First, we’ve always done a really good job of working across offices and geographies. That’s why the pandemic didn’t disrupt us – we were already equipped to do what we were doing, and do well. Second, we have partners who not only are very capable in their expertise but really hungry to develop new business. Being like-minded, we are more than willing to help each other.

What is your advice for a new hire?

Always focus first and foremost on your internal market – partners and associates – and your support staff. Paralegals and administrative professionals are wonderful resources. Build relationships with them to give you better footing within the firm so you can better market yourself externally.

Is there a matter you worked on that you found particularly rewarding?

I represented the construction lender on the Huron Building, our new office building in Milwaukee. Not many people can say they worked on their own office building! I get to enjoy the fruits of my own labor every day.

How has Husch Blackwell supported you in achieving work/life balance?

I have found a way to involve my family in my business development efforts – I find things to do with my family, clients and their children – which the firm supports. This way I grow my client relationships while spending time with my own family. One such way is through barbecue competitions. I’ve always enjoyed grilling outdoors, and when my family and I moved to Wisconsin, I decided to enter a competition just to meet people. I now compete nationally in different circuits, and clients have helped me on my team (Come and Smoke It BBQ). Following my suggestion, the firm is sponsoring the largest barbecue competition in the world in Kansas City later this year and I will invite clients to experience it.
