Steve is Chair of the firm’s Government Compliance, Investigations & Litigation Department and a member of the Partner Board. He is a former U.S. Attorney whose work included prosecuting public corruption cases. He now counsels public and private companies through government investigations and civil litigation. Steve’s practice in government compliance, investigations and litigation includes corporate internal investigations and representation on behalf of boards and business leadership related to violations of federal law. Steve has been counsel for healthcare providers related to internal investigations, voluntary disclosures and negotiations with the Department of Justice and Office of Inspector General on national and local healthcare investigations.
Nominated by President Bill Clinton, Steve served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri from 1993 to 2001. His office obtained numerous convictions involving corruption at City Hall in Kansas City, Mo., local county courthouses and the Missouri General Assembly. Steve advised U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and the Department of Justice on corporate prosecution policies and healthcare-related policy issues as part of his tenure on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. In addition, he co-developed Project Cease Fire, a nationally recognized program targeting prosecution of felons illegally possessing firearms.
