An Oct. 27, 2014, National Law Journal article summarizing the Ka-Nefer-Nefer Egyptian mummy mask case (US v. Mask of Ka-Nefer-Nefer) reveals that on Oct. 14, the U.S. government paid $425,000 to cover the St. Louis Art Museum’s legal fees acquired while defending its right to retain ownership of the mask.

Husch Blackwell partner David Linenbroker and Dentons partner Patrick McInerney argued that the government failed to show "when the mask was stolen, the circumstances under which it was stolen, the location from which it was stolen, the person or persons who may have stolen the mask, whether there was any law enforcement investigation of the 'theft,' nor does it suggest any reason for the 33-year delay between discovery of the 'theft' and the report of the 'theft.'”
