Murray previously served as Special Assistant and then Administrative Assistant for U.S. Congresswoman Jan Meyers (R-Kansas) (1985-1997). He also worked as Congresswoman Meyers' Finance Director during her campaign (1984). Murray spent the early years of his career working on various political campaigns. One of his first positions was on staff for Bob Dole's first run for U.S. Senate (1968).

Murray received his B.S. in Political Science from Kansas State University (1970). He joined the U.S. Army Reserves upon graduating and served as a First Lieutenant in the Infantry until he received an Honorable Discharge (1970-1978).
