Husch Blackwell Adds Energy Partner Kyle Barry from McGuireWoods

Kyle C. Barry joins Husch Blackwell as the newest Partner in the firm’s Energy group. Barry will work for the firm from Springfield, Ill.

Barry previously worked for McGuireWoods as a Partner and as a Vice President in its subsidiary, McGuireWoods Consulting (2005-2013). Since 2009, Barry has served as Illinois counsel for the FutureGen 2.0 clean coal project, a near zero-emission carbon capture and sequestration project under development in west central Illinois. In that role, Barry advised on power purchase issues with the Illinois Power Agency and Illinois Commerce Commission, public finance issues with the Illinois Finance Authority, public utility and Illinois energy legislation, and development of CO2 liability management legislation. He also represented a variety of wind energy clients and major power generation clients, and he co-founded the Illinois Wind Energy Association. In addition, Barry has helped clients obtain economic development incentives in connection with capital investment projects in Illinois. Barry has also helped clients navigate issues and challenges presented by Illinois state regulatory agencies and the Illinois General Assembly.

Barry began his legal practice in Chicago; in 2004, he left Jenkens & Gilchrist in order to take the role of deputy general counsel for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) in Springfield, Ill. (2004-2005). During that time, he managed the Springfield legal office and the legal affairs for the Large Business Development Division, the Energy and Recycling Division, the Illinois Office of Coal Development and the Illinois Trade Office.

Barry received his J.D., with Distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City (1995). He received his B.A.in Political Science and Political Economy, summa cum laude, from Washington University in St. Louis (1992).
