Law firm welcomes Darren Coates in Austin, Texas

Husch Blackwell has added Darren C. Coates as an Associate to its Healthcare, Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals industry team. He is an Associate in the firm’s Austin, Texas, office.

Coates focuses on assisting hospitals and other healthcare providers in a variety of regulatory compliance, business transactions and reimbursement matters. His experience with regulatory, transactional and operational issues includes assisting clients with the creation, development and operation of Medicaid supplemental payment programs; compliance with Stark Law and federal and state anti-kickback laws; and business acquisitions and new hospital ventures. He practiced law at healthcare boutique Gjerset & Lorenz for the past three years (2010-2013).

Previously, Coates worked as a law clerk for several federal healthcare agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Departmental Appeals Board (2010), the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition Health Care Division (2009), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ General Law Division (2008). He also served as a legislative law clerk for U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer during the passage of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2009). Additionally, he worked as a legal aid counselor in the Health Rights Law Clinic for The George Washington University (2008) where he assisted Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries in administrative appeals for benefit determinations.

Coates earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School (2010), a health policy graduate certificate from The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (2010), and a B.S. in health sciences from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (2006).
